This module introduces coaches to the foundational difference between teaching and coaching, emphasizing the importance of creating safe environments where athletes can challenge themselves, fail, and grow.

Full Description:

Foundations of Human-Centered Coaching is the entry-level course for The Weight Behind It. Module 1 reframes coaching as more than technical instruction. While teaching focuses on delivering knowledge and building understanding, coaching focuses on creating an environment where athletes feel psychologically safe to challenge themselves.

Throughout this module, coaches will explore:

  • The difference between coaching and teaching

  • Why fear of failure limits athlete growth

  • The importance of emotional awareness

  • The role of relationship-building in long-term athlete development

  • Why technical knowledge alone is not enough

This lesson emphasizes that athletes are humans, not machines. Successful coaching requires trust, clarity of expectations, and the ability to balance challenge with safety. Coaches will learn how to switch between teaching and coaching roles appropriately and how shaping behavior over time leads to sustainable growth.
